Glossary
This glossary explains common ecoacoustics terms in plain language for researchers, educators, community groups, government agencies, and anyone new to the field.
- FAIR data
Data managed so that people and computers can find, access, combine, and reuse it.
FAIR does not necessarily mean that data is completely open. Access can still be restricted for ethical, cultural, legal, or conservation reasons. The aim is to describe data clearly, use shared standards, provide stable identifiers, and state how the data can be accessed and reused.
- Spectrogram
A picture of sound that shows how its frequencies change over time.
Spectrograms make patterns such as animal calls easier to see and compare. Their appearance depends on settings including window size, frequency range, colour scale, brightness, and contrast. Changing those settings can reveal different features of the same recording.
